What is AIS/TAC

What is AIS/TAC?

AIS stands for Automotive Industry Standards, the technical automotive standards for India. These are based on the UNECE standards. The Automotive Industry Standards are issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which is the ministry regulating the automotive sector in India.

TAC is the abbreviation for Type Approval Certificate. TAC is issued for products that meet the required standard and meet technical and safety requirements.

TAC approval must be obtained before the product is introduced to the market. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is responsible for issuing the certification.

What is ARAI?

ARAI is the acronym for the Automotive Research Association of India. This is the largest of the competent authorities for the so-called AIS certification in India. AIS certification was introduced in 1989 with the adoption of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). In the CMVR, rules and regulations are published, among other things, in relation to the approval of vehicles, traffic controls or the production and maintenance of motor vehicles.

Here is a brief video about the AIS certification, presented by Julian Busch, director of India Certification:

You can also watch this video on our Video Channel.

What is the difference between ARAI, AIS and TAC?

The terms ARAI, AIS and TAC always refer to the same certification. These abbreviations are often used synonymously. TAC (Type Approval Certificate) is a very common term that can often be found in connection with certification in general, as is the case here. As ARAI is the leading authority for certification of automotive parts in India, it is also frequently mentioned. However, the most accurate term is AIS certification, as it refers to the concrete permissible Indian standards.

Another term that is sometimes mentioned is Conformity of Production (COP) Certification, as Conformity of Production refers to the testing of quality assurance in production, one of the most important steps in the AIS certification process.

Which products are covered by AIS certification?

AIS certification is required for automotive components. These products all have in common that they are subject to safety or electromagnetic compatibility requirements.

Currently it concerns for example the following products:

– Automotive Electronics

– Safety glass

– Tyres

– Brake Hoses

– Lights

– Seat belts

– Door locks

– Fuel tanks

– Batteries

You can find a current list of all products on our subpage “Relevant components“.

How does the certification process work?

The Indian regulation No.126 of the CMVR defines the certification process of AIS certification. This certification process is similar to the CCC certification for the Chinese market.

Depending on the product category there are the following certification steps:

  1. comprehensive application with required documents.
  2. product testing in India (exceptions possible).
  3. on-site production inspection (exceptions possible).
  4. certification upon successful application.
  5. marking with the AIS certification mark.

The steps of the process differ depending on the type of product. In the case of safety-relevant components, for example, not only the product must be inspected in India, but also the production line on the manufacturer’s premises. However, electromagnetic compatibility tests of automotive electronics can also be carried out by so-called witness tests at the manufacturer’s premises and do not have to be carried out separately in India.

The product tests as well as the certification itself can be carried out at various authorities, such as the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India), the ACMA (Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India) or the ICAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology).

The process of AIS certification according to the Indian AIS (Automotive Industry Standard) can be challenging and complex. Efficient communication with the Indian authorities as well as the accurate preparation of all relevant documents and test samples are essential for the successful application and implementation of AIS certification.
