India Extends BIS CRS Registration Validity to Five Years

2. June 2026

India has introduced an important update to its BIS CRS registration framework, extending the validity period of registrations under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) from two years to five years. The change was introduced through the recent BIS Conformity Assessment Amendment Regulations, 2026, and applies to both new registrations and renewal applications.

The revised approach is intended to reduce the administrative burden associated with frequent renewals while maintaining ongoing regulatory oversight. Under the updated provisions, manufacturers obtaining a new registration or renewing an existing registration will receive a validity period of five years. Previously, new registrations were granted for two years by default, while renewal applications could be requested for periods ranging from two to five years.

Electronic products and other products covered under the BIS CRS scheme usually require BIS (CRS) certification in order to be approved for import and sale in India.

Annual BIS (CRS) Compliance Requirements Remain Unchanged

Although the registration validity has been extended, manufacturers must continue to fulfill annual compliance obligations to keep their registrations active. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has clarified that applicable grant or renewal fees must still be paid every year throughout the five-year registration period.

In addition, manufacturers are required to submit annual production data together with the corresponding fees. BIS has also introduced greater flexibility by allowing manufacturers to complete the annual renewal process before the prescribed due date. This measure may help companies better manage their compliance schedules and reduce the risk of administrative delays.

Key elements of the amendment include:

  • BIS CRS registration validity increased from two years to five years.
  • Renewal of the registration number (R-number) is now available only for a five-year period.
  • Annual production data submission remains mandatory.
  • Applicable annual fees must continue to be paid each year.
  • Advance completion of annual renewal formalities is permitted.

Implications of the BIS (CRS) Changes for Manufacturers and Market Access

The amendment provides greater long-term certainty for manufacturers supplying products to the Indian market. By reducing the frequency of formal registration renewals, companies may benefit from lower administrative effort and improved compliance planning. However, the extension of validity does not lessen ongoing regulatory responsibilities.

Manufacturers should note that failure to submit required production data or annual fees may trigger enforcement actions under the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, as amended in 2026. Depending on the circumstances, BIS may apply measures such as suspension, deferment, cancellation, or expiry of the registration.

The update reflects India’s continued effort to streamline conformity assessment procedures while maintaining regulatory control over products covered by the CRS framework. Companies exporting products to India should review their compliance processes to ensure annual obligations continue to be met throughout the new five-year registration period.
