BIS Scheme X – Certification Requirement for Industrial Machinery in India
23. June 2025BIS Scheme X is a certification scheme introduced by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), requiring mandatory BIS certification for various industrial machinery and equipment intended for sale or import into India. Affected categories include pumps, compressors, packaging machines, and electrical systems.
Originally scheduled for August 2025, the deadline has now been officially extended to September 2026. This postponement provides manufacturers with more time to prepare, as many regulatory details remain unclear, including applicable technical standards and testing procedures. These uncertainties have caused delays in certification planning and application submissions.
Manufacturers already targeting the Indian market are particularly affected, as long processing times and a likely expansion of regulated product categories add further complexity. In response, the Indian government announced a comprehensive amendment in June 2025 to address open issues.
Recommendation: Despite the deadline extension, manufacturers are advised to begin the certification process early to avoid import restrictions or economic losses.
