New standard TEC 13016: 2020 for wireless communication devices

Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) has published the standard TEC 13016: 2020 titled “Specific Absorption Rate SAR for Wireless Communication Devices used in close proximity to the human body” on the TEC website in the year 2020. TEC is the abbreviation for Telecommunication Engineering Center. TEC is the authority in India responsible for the certification for telecommunication products according to the MTCTE (Mandatory Testing Certification of Telecommunication Equipment) regulations.

The Indian Telegraph Amendment Regulations of September 5, 2017 provide that any telecommunication equipment must undergo mandatory testing and certification before sale, import or use in India.
Right now, TEC is working in the direction of updating the standard of SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) based on some of the inputs TEC might have received. A draft of the updated standard has been prepared and until mid of September comments were able to be given from the manufacturers and industry stakeholders.

Category of wireless devices are the following:

For the TEC certification process product tests in India are required in the general certification scheme. If the tests are passed successfully, the authority issues the certificate at the end of the TEC certification process. The certificate is valid for ten years and can then be renewed.

TEC certification has been around many years before 2019 as a voluntary certification, but since April 2019 the certification has been mandatory and every year the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC) expands the certification catalog and adds more telecom products. See the list of TEC standards here.

Nokia hopes India will help shape global 6G standards

Finnish telecom equipment supplier Nokia is counting on India to help shape 5G Advanced and 6G network technologies. As a result, the company has increased its efforts and presence in India through Bell Labs, its subsidiary responsible for research. According to Nokia’s CTO and CSO Nishant Batra, India’s expertise and resources are currently underestimated. In doing so, he admitted that standards could not come from India as a country, but stressed that skilled experts and manpower would play their part. That’s why Nokia is expanding Bell Labs’ operations in India right now. Batra expects a rapid increase in the number of users of this network, as well as the upcoming generation 6G, due to the falling prices of 5G-enabled devices. He mentioned that when 5G was launched 18 months ago, device prices were so high that only a small percentage of the population could benefit. Now, however, the technology has reached most users and is well received, he said. Therefore, Batra said, it is important to have a robust plan for the rollout of 5G and the introduction of 6G in India. WPC certification is necessary for wireless products in order to be used and sold in India.

The WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination) is the national broadcasting authority in India and is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It was established in 1952 and is headquartered in New Delhi, with additional regional offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Guwahati. The WPC’s main tasks are to issue amateur radio licenses and to allocate and monitor the frequency spectrum. In addition, the WPC is responsible for WPC ETA certification (WPC Equipment Type Approval ETA) and other radio approvals. For foreign manufacturers, only the WPC ETA Approval is relevant in most cases. The WPC certification is used synonymously for the ETA (Equipment Type Approval) abroad.

The national broadcasting authority WPC (Wireless Planning & Coordination) is responsible for this certification, in order to regulate the issuing of issuing of amateur radio licenses and the allocation and monitoring of the frequency spectrum.

New Amendment Regarding CSFC Testing for Vehicles

On September 2, 2022 the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification affecting all M and N category vehicles, excluding tippers, with a gross vehicle weight more than 3.5 tons. Starting April 1, 2023 these vehicles must be tested according to IS 11921:2022 for constant speed fuel consumption.

For these vehicles, whose components often require AIS certification and BIS certification, following passage will be added to the notification of the Government of India in the former Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways (Department of Road Transport and Highways) number S.O. 1365(E):

Constant speed fuel consumption test for all M and N category vehicles excluding tippers, with gross vehicle weight more than 3.5 tonsIS: 11921: 2020 as amended from time to time, at the constant speeds Light Motor Vehicles – 50 Km/h Medium and Heavy Motor Vehicles 40 Km/h and 60 Km/h1st April, 2023

The changes will be implemented on April 1, 2023.

Passenger car sales in India could reach new record levels in 2022

Passenger car sales in India could be around 250,000 units higher than previous calculations, according to estimates. Industry experts told the Economic Times of India that the current figures are already record highs. The automotive industry cited the improved supply situation for components and thus an increase in production as reasons. In addition, dealers continued to receive many pre-orders for new vehicles in the run-up to the festive season, despite high inflation and rising interest rates on loans. Overall, experts estimate that around 3.65 million passenger cars will be sold in calendar year 2022. This represents an increase of 17 to 20 percent compared to the previous year. Vinkesh Gulati, president of the Automobile Dealers Association, said this year could be the best year yet in terms of sales figures. Previously, 2018 was considered a record-breaking year, with about 3.4 million vehicles sold. Cars and their components must be certified in India according to AIS guidelines.

Although sales dropped to 2.4 million units during the corona pandemic in 2020, the situation has improved significantly since then. Demand, for example, rose far beyond automakers’ production capacities, leading to long waiting times for new vehicles. The global shortage of computer chips, which are also increasingly being installed in vehicles, further exacerbated the supply situation. Nevertheless, sales figures rose to around 3 million units in 2021. What makes automakers optimistic for the current year is the introduction of numerous new models and the good response to them from customers. New models include Suzuki’s Brezza and Grand Vitara, Hyundai Tucson, Tata Punch, and Mahindra & Mahindra’s XUV700 and Scorpio, among others. Currently, pre-orders for new models entering the market total approximately 725,000 vehicles.
