Announcement on Change of Marking for BIS-CRS Certification

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), which provides the regulatory framework for BIS-certification, has decided to change the CRS standard marking. This is to be unified with the already existing and well-known ISI standard marking. The information such as registration number, IS/IEC standard and the BIS website will remain unchanged. This is only an aesthetic change that does not require factory audits, testing or registration. The aim of this change is to increase consumer adoption and awareness of ISI labelling. Costs and efforts will be reduced by using a single mark.

The tentative timeline for the introduction of this change has not yet been set, but it is expected to come into force within the next 12 months. As soon as new information is available on this topic, it will be published in the news section on our website.

BIS certification is divided into two approval processes, BIS-ISI certification and BIS-CRS certification, and is mandatory for many product groups. For both certifications, the marking requirements must be met to ensure the conformity of the products in the Indian market.

Since 2012, the BIS has been gradually expanding the certification catalog and continuously adding additional goods. BIS certification mandatory for many electronic products for industrial and consumer uses. Factory inspections are also required for some products.

Decision made for Indian Greenfield LNG project

Petronet LNG, a major player in India’s liquefied natural gas market, has made a final decision to move forward with its proposed floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) project at Gopalpur. This will be the company’s first facility of its kind on the nation’s east coast. Equipment and machinery relevant for the oil and gas industry often need a PESO certification in order to be approved for the Indian market.

The board of Petronet LNG has approved the 4 million tonnes per annum Gopalpur LNG phase one import project, which carries an estimated cost of around 23 billion Indian rupees (around $278 million). The plan is for the project to be operational by the end of 2025. Site of the operation is Ganjam, Odisha and will be financed through a debt and equity combination.

Additionally, Petronet LNG has stated that the FSRU-based receiving and regasification scheme has the potential to be later on converted into a land-based terminal, with 5 million tons per annum capacity.
The company currently operates two land-based terminals, one in Gujarat with over 17 million tpa capacity and one in Kerala with 5 million tpa. There are current plans to expand the capacity at the Gujarat facility. Petronet LNG has also considered locations such as Andhra Pradesh and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands for future import facilities.

Petronet LNG is a consortium made up of India’s state-owned Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, Gail, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation, who hold a combined 50% stake, with the remaining 50% being publicly held.

PESO certification is issued by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation of India. Relevant product groups or components include gas and pressure vessels, valves and fittings, or safety equipment. A complete list can be found on the page about PESO certification mandatory products.

BIS advises consumers to only buy toys with ISI quality mark

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) strongly advises consumers to only buy toys with the BIS ISI stamp of approval and the quality and safety associated with it. The BIS draws attention to the mandatory certification for toys and urges consumers to report any products without the ISI quality mark via the authority’s “BIS Care” app. Products with the ISI mark guarantee a certain standard of safety during manufacture and throughout their lifetime.

The BIS standards are intended to ensure consumer safety, which is why the BIS is subordinate to the Ministry of Consumer Protection. Toys have already had to pass a quality test since January 2021. According to BIS, 800 manufacturers have successfully obtained BIS certification so far. Without BIS testing, toys are not allowed to be produced or placed on the market, which also affects import and export.

A large number of different products, including toys, require BIS certification in order to import them into India or place them on the market. Depending on the product, a distinction is made between BIS-ISI or BIS-CRS certification. As the product list is constantly being expanded, we will be pleased to help you with an initial assessment.

Since 2012, the BIS has been gradually expanding the certification catalog and continuously adding additional goods. BIS certification mandatory for many electronic products for industrial and consumer uses. Factory inspections are also required for some products.

Indian government and private developers pledge US$6.7 billion for green hydrogen

Indian solar developer Acme Group and the Karnataka state government plan to invest US$6.7 billion in green hydrogen and ammonia production plants. Further details of the project were laid down in the memorandum of understanding signed this summer. Among other things, a production facility for 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen and green ammonia annually is to be built by 2027. So far, Acme has not specified how many tonnes of hydrogen and ammonia each will produce annually. Nevertheless, the plant will be one of the largest in the world when completed, according to the industry journal Upstream. The energy for the project will come from a purpose-built solar plant. Relevant product groups or components that require PESO certification in order to be imported and approved in India are, for example, gas and pressure vessels, valves and fittings, or safety equipment.

Acme is currently developing another green ammonia production facility of comparable size in Duqm, Oman. This plant is being built in collaboration with Scatec of Norway. In the first phase of the project, 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia will be produced annually. In the second phase, the operators expect to produce 1.2 million tonnes annually with the help of a 3.5 gigawatt electrolyser, which in turn will be supplied with 5.5 gigawatts of electricity from solar energy. Acme has already built a partially commercial green ammonia plant in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan as a test. For the latest plant in Karnataka, the government there assured Acme of all help with the approval process and plans to become a hub for green hydrogen. India plans to produce around 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. To this end, the national government in New Delhi has announced that it will be waiving charges for inter-state power transmission for the next 25 years and prioritising the expansion of the power grid.

The planned expansion of renewable energies is also expected to increase the demand for imported products in the power generation sector. Therefore, the Indian power sector offers good opportunities for your company to offer services and products there or to produce locally.

A complete list of products for which the PESO certification is relevant can be found on the page about PESO certification mandatory products. The experts at MPR International GmbH are available to answer your questions about PESO certification or other India certifications without obligation for an initial assessment.
